Executive Director

 

About the King Urban Life Center

The King Urban Life Center (KULC), a national historic landmark located in Buffalo, New York, is seeking an Executive Director. The King Urban Life Center serves as a resource hub for the East Side community by connecting children and families to impactful programming and by catalyzing positive neighborhood change. They deliver exceptional service by engaging and exposing students to a wide variety of educational and cultural programming they may otherwise not experience.

Some of these key programs include: 

  • ParentChild+ Program: This initiative supports caregivers in preparing their children for academic success through consistent, long-term home visiting.

  • STEAM After-School Program: The S.T.E.A.M. Team After-school program offers innovative early-childhood and school-age programs in partnership with various organizations across Buffalo.

  • Family Fun Fridays: A free monthly event for families, featuring dinner, entertainment, and engaging activities for all ages.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director must have an understanding of the challenges facing Buffalo’s East Side and be ready to play a leading role in achieving the KULC’s mission to bring about transformational change in this underdeveloped neighborhood.  While serving as a passionate, innovative and visionary leader, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to lead a prominent East Side organization on the brink of bringing about real change. 

 

Primary Job Purpose

The Executive Director will be responsible for enacting the KULC mission, as stated below:

The King Urban Life Center (KULC), in partnership with and under the direction of the community residents, is committed to preserving and using the historic building it occupies as a catalyst for radical educational, economic, and social neighborhood change. 

They will be responsible for maintaining and expanding the KULC’s current programs, as measured by data-driven indicators of success. In addition, they must be a visionary leader capable of identifying new opportunities for growth that benefit the residents of the KULC’s geographic footprint. The Executive Director must serve effectively as an ambassador of the KULC with the ability to articulate its mission to diverse sets of stakeholders and to interact productively with its various partners. The Executive Director will play a leading role in helping the KULC realize its goal of radically transforming its host community into a vibrant neighborhood.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the organization to achieve annual and strategic goals and objectives.

  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.

  • Supervise and collaborate with organization staff.

  • Guide implementation of the organization’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

  • Prepare annual budget in collaboration with the Finance Committee; ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

  • Serve as The King Urban Life Center’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public.

  • Establish, where appropriate, maintain and grow strategic partner relationships with the members of the larger King Urban campus and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance The King Urban Life Center’s mission.

  • Engage in fundraising and developing other revenues.

  • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

  • Prepare and attend Board of Directors’, Executive Committee, and other committee meetings.

  • Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the organization.

  • Review and approve contracts for services.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Education & Skills

  • A Masters or Bachelor degree in a human services or related field, with job experience that translates to non-profit administration.

  • Strong organizational experience, including management of a staff, planning, program development and delegation of non-essential tasks.

  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills, as well as the capability to foster and develop relationships with current and potential partners, donors, and volunteers.

  • Experience with fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to non-profits.

The total compensation range for this job is $90,000 - $100,000 annually.
